Allison Janney to Star in Bad Robot Thriller ‘Lou’ (Exclusive)

November 5, 2018. Allison Janney has signed on to star in 'Lou,' a dramatic thriller from J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot production banner. Anna Foerster, known for her work on TV’s 'Outlander' and 'Jessica Jones,' is helming the project. The script, by Maggie Cohn with revision by Jack Stanley, follows a young woman and her landlord, Lou, who team up to track down the former’s child after the girl is kidnapped by the woman’s estranged husband. The story has been described as being a tonal mix of Thelma and Louis and Taken. Janney will play the landlord, a hard-shelled and rule-breaking woman that has unexpectedly impressive tracking abilities, among other skill sets. Lou was previously set up at Paramount but is now in turnaround, with Bad Robot raising financing to make the movie independently. A spring 2019 start is being eyed.

The shoot was pushed from Spring 2019 to Spring 2020, which was then upended by the coronavirus pandemic. Ultimately, Jurnee Smollett was cast, Allison was added as an Executive Producer, and the film was scheduled to shoot in Vancouver starting in June 2021 through late August 2021 as per The Hollywood Reporter:

Jurnee Smollett will star in the Netflix thriller Lou, appearing opposite Allison Janney.

April 28, 2021. J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot is behind the project that will be directed by Anna Foerster (Westworld) from a script by Maggie Cohn. The story centers on a woman whose daughter is kidnapped, so she teams up with the mysterious older woman next door to pursue the kidnapper — a journey into the wilderness that will test their limits and expose dark and shocking secrets from their pasts. Abrams, Jon Cohen and Hannah Minghella will produce, with Braden Aftergood, Janney, Smollett and Lindsey Weber acting as executive producers. Filming is set for June 2021 in Vancouver, Canada and surrounding areas.

‘Lou’ was successfully shot and filmed as scheduled in Canada, Summer 2021. The film wrapped in late August 2021 and will be released on Netflix on September 23, 2022. See below for a few social media shots of Allison during her time in Vancouver.
